DMITRI MATHENY GROUPThe Dmitri Matheny Group performs over 100 concerts on tour each year.
Directed by musician/composer Dmitri Matheny ("the first breakthrough flugelhornist since Chuck Mangione" —San Jose Mercury News), the DMG has developed an engaging repertoire and a strong international following. The group's signature sound pleases both crowds and critics, balancing fresh, original works with familiar jazz classics, hard bop, west coast cool and selections from the DMG's 10 critically-acclaimed CDs.
Our 2015-16 Season features five popular programs:
SAGEBRUSH REBELLION (quartet) showcases selections from Matheny's tenth album as a leader, recently released on the Papillon/Blue Port Jazz label. The ensemble performs new original compositions, jazz classics by Johnny Burke and Duke Ellington, and favorite lesser-known works of Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow and Nat Adderley. The album is receiving excellent reviews and airplay nationally.
CELEBRATING ELLA! Dmitri Matheny Plays the Ella Fitzgerald Songbook (quartet). Ella Fitzgerald is a major influence on Dmitri's approach to melody and phrasing. In this popular program, the Dmitri Matheny Group performs favorite selections from her seminal songbook recordings, highlighting the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer.
JAZZ NOIR (quintet) offers a fresh spin on familiar TV and movie themes (film noir, spy thrillers and crime dramas), new works and jazz classics. Concert highlights include a Noir Medley of cinematic favorites (Touch of Evil, Laura, Chinatown, Vertigo, Taxi Driver, Blues in the Night) and our original Crime Scenes suite, a dreamlike series of vignettes linked together with voiceover narrative in the hardboiled detective style of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.
THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK (with vocalist Clairdee) celebrates the centennial birthdays of both Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday with a performance of of favorite Broadway and Hollywood hits of the 1920s through the 60s, including works by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and more.
THE SNOWCAT (with vocalist Holly Pyle) is Matheny's original musical production, the heartwarming tale of a little girl's search for her wandering white cat on a chilly afternoon. Each year, Dmitri and friends bring The SnowCat to life in a popular series of performances for families, combining singing, storytelling, live music, and visual art.
All About Jazz agrees: "An all-star jazz band featuring some of the most accomplished musicians in the western United States, the Dmitri Matheny Group is a cohesive and seamless unit, serving up equal parts soulful expression, caressing phrases, imaginative asides, and dedicated lyricism."
The band has also garnered praise for it's youth and family programming. Dr. Herb Wong writes, "As past President of the International Association of Jazz Educators, I'm gratified that the Dmitri Matheny Group has made jazz education a prominent and vital part of their busy season."
