ON THIS DAY IN 1988

23 years ago today, I played my first flugelhorn-only concert (no trumpet), a recital at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall with the True Colors Big Band. The ensemble: Ken Schaphorst, conductor; Rob Scheps, soprano and alto sax; Kenny Brooks, soprano and tenor sax; Jay Brandford, clarinet and baritone sax; Andy Gravish, trumpet; Scott Cowan, trumpet; Dmitri Matheny, flugelhorn; Curtis Hasselbring, trombone; Josh Roseman, trombone; John Medeski, piano; Wesley Wirth, bass; Jim Harp, drums; Dov Schiller, percussion. Not a bad line-up.

NEW ALE UNVEILED

Cheers to Dogfish Head Brewery for creating a new beer -- MILES DAVIS BITCHES BREW -- to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the seminal Miles Davis album of the same name!

Dogfish describes its new brew as "a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root...a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece."

The bottle's label features the late Mati Klarwein's famous artwork from the original album cover.
