New CD Sagebrush Rebellion Now Available for Pre-Order

I'm delighted to announce that my new album Sagebrush Rebellion is now available for pre-order at www.DmitriMatheny.com.

The album will be officially released August 9 to iTunes, CD Baby, Amazon, radio and retail on the BluePort Jazz/Papillon Recordings label. We're staging CD Release Celebration shows in key markets around the country this fall.

In the meantime, for my friends and fans who pre-order now: you'll immediately receive an advance digital download of all tracks, plus free shipping throughout the continental US as soon as the CD arrives from the factory.

The CD features a terrific west coast rhythm section—Nick Manson, Justin Grinnell and Duncan Moore—and a great mix of music, including some new originals, classics by Johnny Burke and Duke Ellington, and favorite songs by Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow and Nat Adderley.

Jim Merod, a close friend of my mentor Art Farmer and the director of BluePort Jazz, says, "This is one of my favorite recordings...I hope listeners enjoy the depth and delicacy of these songs crafted with Dmitri’s flugelhorn mastery."

I can't wait to hear what you think of our album. Check it out here.

Thanks for your continuing support!

Michigan Tour Diary — Day 1

Dmitri Matheny Group JAZZ NOIR
Michigan Tour Diary — Day 1
April 10 Chandler AZ

Journey Proud.

That's what they call the feeling you get the night before a big trip,
when you're so keyed up, excited and anxious that you can hardly sleep.

Even after your bags are packed and all the preparations have been made,
the monkey mind just can't help itself. It frets, worries, makes lists, obsesses over minutia.

I get journey proud before every tour. This time is no different.
Sassy handles most of the travel details, and quite expertly.
But that just leaves me more time to fidget.

For the most part, what I feel is excitement. I love to travel, I love to perform, and it's time.
Because spring has arrived in the Lonesome Desert, and that means heat.
Hot heat. That 'get out of town if you know what's good for you' kind of heat.

Ever since moving to Phoenix from San Francisco a few years ago,
I've arranged for my annual touring schedule to start up just as the perfect weather ends.

It goes like this:

First, the Pyhrroloxia sings.
Then the pitchers arrive.
Then the mercury rises.
Then the boogie woogie flugelboy hits the road.

So tomorrow morning we fly to Michigan...where it's gonna be cool.

A Flug-tastic Weekend

Just ahead:

Friday 2/28 @ 4:30 PM Phoenix AZ | Workshop at South Mountain Community College
Friday 2/28 @ 7:00 PM Phoenix AZ | Concert at South Mountain Community College

Saturday 3/1 @ 2:00 PM South San Francisco CA | Workshop at El Camino High School

Saturday 3/1 @ 8:00 PM Berkeley CA | Concert at California Jazz Conservatory

Sunday 3/2 @ 2:00 PM Berkeley CA | Workshop at California Jazz Conservatory

Monday 3/3 @ 2:00 PM Los Gatos CA | Workshop at Los Gatos High School

I've been in residence this week in the music department of South Mountain Community College, giving master classes and rehearsing with the talented musicians in the school's day and evening jazz programs. Tonight we perform in the college's beautiful theater for the SMCC Jazz Festival. The concert is a showcase for the SMCC Jazz and Latin Jazz ensembles. I'll appear as guest soloist with both groups; my quintet (featuring Andrew Gross, Nick Manson, T-Bone Sistrunk and Dom Moio) will headline.

Tomorrow I'll present a jazz improvisation clinic at the ECHS Jazz Festival in South San Francisco, then tomorrow night the Dmitri Matheny Group (featuring Dave Ellis, Matt Clark, Seward McCain and Leon Joyce Jr) performs at the newly renamed California Jazz Conservatory (formerly the Jazzschool) in Berkeley. Hearty congratulations to Susan Muscarella and the CJC faculty on receiving accreditation from the National Association of Schools!

Sunday it's a Melodic Mastery workshop at the CJC, then down to the South Bay for a Monday master class at Los Gatos High School. Upward and onward!
